ESOS Phase 3 Compliance is Coming

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Phase 3 compliance for UK and Northern Ireland-based organisations is fast approaching this summer. For leaders of organisations affected by these requirements, it will serve as an opportunity to formally assess and report to the Environmental Agency the impact to date of their decarbonisation journey which commenced in recent years.

What is ESOS?

ESOS, an abbreviation of Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme, is a mandate for major enterprises in the UK to find and implement energy-saving initiatives. It is the UK’s response to Article 8 of the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive, intending to reduce carbon emissions. For more information about ESOS, read our ESOS guide.

ESOS Reporting Phases

As well as identifying potential new energy-saving opportunities, reporting on progress to date and savings achieved since the passing of Phase 2 reporting and indeed Phase 1 (data permitting), is now required under recently updated ESOS guidelines. For others, ESOS Phase 3 may be another milestone to prompt required action from board members to initiate decarbonisation plans for their organisation over the coming months and years.

Meeting ESOS Phase 3 Requirements

Ultimately, companies that will meet the requirements for ESOS Phase 3 will do so in two ways:

  1. Utilising Key Data: Access to detailed energy consumption data across electricity, fossil fuels, and transportation is crucial. Precise and granular data simplifies the task of calculating Total Energy Consumption (TEC), with at least 95% evaluated under Significant Energy Consumption (SEC) as required by the audit.
  2. Focus on Energy-Saving Measures: Sub-metering data for electricity, heat, steam, compressed air, and other energy sources should be available to explore energy-saving measures for significant energy users. This will allow for targeted improvements and more efficient resource allocation.
